Big Sean Opens Up About His Battle With Depression And Anxiety

Big Sean says his battle with depression and anxiety forced him to take some much-needed time to himself in 2018.

In a series of three videos posted to Instagram on Monday, his 31st birthday, the rapper opened up about his struggles with his mental health and how he’s doing after making changes to his life.

According to Big Sean, whose real name is Sean Michael Leonard Anderson, around the time he turned 30, he realized he felt lost and that many of the things he once loved, like music, were no longer providing him joy or satisfaction. He knew it was time to step back and try something new.

“I didn’t know how I got there,” he said. “I been meditating since I was seventeen years old. That helps with anxiety, depression, all them things. It wasn’t doing it all the way for this, so I knew this required some special attention.”

But after he started seeing a therapist and sought out spiritual guidance it finally became clear to him that there was something lacking from his life – clarity. And with clarity came the realization that he was placing too much emphasis on what other people thought about him and it had pushed him into a number of “toxic” situations and relationships.

“I started doing things by myself, doing things I never thought I’d do, like going skydiving or whatever I thought was fun, just doing it,” he explained. “In the midst I definitely re-discovered myself and found a whole new energy, and me being the source of it and not somebody else.”

Big Sean says that things have gotten better since he reoriented himself; music no longer feels like a chore and he actually feels happy.

“Conditional love is cool, the money and instant gratification, but your foundation on which you stand on is the unconditional love,” he said. “Hey man, put the energy back into yourself, be clear about what you want to do, who you want to do it with. Just know that it all translates to happiness. It feels good to be back at a higher level.”
