A therapist in Switzerland has confessed to sexually abusing more than 110 mentally disabled men, women and children over a 29-year period, authorities said Tuesday.

The 54-year-old was arrested nearly a year ago, but authorities kept the details of the case quiet to avoid media attention on an investigation they described at a news conference as "unprecedented."

"One of the central questions of this investigation is how such levels of abuse could go undetected for so long," said the head of Bern police's special investigations unit, Gabriele Berger.

Authorities believe his sexual abuse of those under his care began in 1982, and included 122 people. The man has confessed to 114, while the remaining 8 are looked at only attempted abuse.

The age of his victims varied, but Swiss authorities said 42 were over 18, while the youngest was just a year old. The abuse took place in nine different care homes.

"Several cases involve children, among them children of nursing home employees," police said.

Berger said during the press conference that the man would choose his victims carefully, often finding ones who could not speak.

In more than a dozen cases, police said, the self-described pedophile took pictures and recorded video during his assaults.

The case came to light in March, after two male residents of a care home informed their parents of sexual contact with the therapist. The man was subsequently arrested at his home in the Bernese Oberland, in central Switzerland.

Because of the statue of limitations, not all the crimes can be prosecuted. Of the 122 victims, only 33 cases can be prosecuted, authorities said.

The man was investigated in a case of sexual abuse of a severely mentally disabled 13-year-old girl in 2003, but the inquiry was dropped after experts had doubts about the girl's reports.
